Ah ha. After hearing just about every different type of primer recommended by different people, I should have realized it's just a complex issue, and different primers work best in different conditions.
Finally, a comprehensive look at primers. I'm going to choose to believe this and stop looking for advice on the issue, lest I find other advice and get more confused.
